Industrial Heritage at Risk: Challenges and Future

Where? 6, Avenue des Hauts-Fourneaux, L-4362 Esch-sur-Alzette Art, Culture & Literature

A collective reflection on the challenges of preserving and repurposing industrial heritage.

As part of the 2026 European Heritage Days, this event contributes to a wider European effort to preserve and repurpose industrial heritage. Through a round-table discussion, it invites participants to reflect on the preservation, transformation and transmission of endangered industrial sites.

The Gebléishal in Belval, included in Europa Nostra’s 7 Most Endangered Programme, is an emblematic example of industrial heritage in transition. Using this case study, the discussion explores the different stages in the life of an industrial site: abandonment, preservation, adaptive reuse and redevelopment.

The round table brings together European and local experts in heritage, architecture and industrial history. Discussions will focus on the challenges of preservation and transformation, as well as contemporary approaches to the adaptive reuse of industrial sites.

.

Alongside the discussions, a visual presentation of projects, models and research related to the Gebléishal will place the site within a broader European reflection on the future of industrial heritage. The event encourages dialogue between specialists and the public on the importance of transmission and collective commitment.

Friday, 16 October 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. – Halle des poches à fonte (Esch-Belval).
