Open Day at Bâtiment 4

Where? 66, Rue du Luxembourg, L-4221 Esch-sur-Alzette Theatre, Film & Shows, Art, Culture & Literature, Music Festivals, Training/Conferences

An immersive journey into a former steel industry site reinvented as a cultural space.

Built in 1924 by ARBED, a steel company founded in 1911, Building IV was originally the administrative building of the Schifflange steelworks. This industrial site included four blast furnaces used to transform iron ore from Luxembourg and Moselle mines into cast iron, and later into steel through the steelmaking facilities located on site.

After the industrial period, the building underwent several successive transformations. From 2002 to 2006, it hosted various companies for administrative purposes. From 2006 to 2011, the Technical High School for Health Professions used the building to train numerous students in healthcare professions. Between 2014 and 2016, Enovos temporarily moved part of its teams there.

After remaining vacant from 2016 to 2020, the building found a new purpose when ArcelorMittal made it available as part of Esch2022. The City of Esch-sur-Alzette then initiated and supported the transformation of the building into a cultural third place.

Since 2020, Building IV has been managed by the frEsch association. Today, it welcomes artists, associations, citizen initiatives and a wide range of cultural projects. Its rehabilitation perfectly illustrates the transformation of a former industrial site into a creative, vibrant space oriented towards the future.

This project fully reflects the 2026 theme: “Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reinvent.” Building IV demonstrates the ability of industrial heritage to be preserved, reinvented and passed on to future generations.

Proposal for participation in the European Heritage Days (16–18 October 2026)

During these three days, frEsch asbl will open the doors of this unique venue to the public with a varied programme of events:

  • guided tours in French and Luxembourgish tracing the history of the building, from its industrial origins to its current transformation;
  • open artist studios and opportunities to meet the resident artists;
  • theatre performances and dance shows;
  • artistic and heritage exhibitions;
  • .
  • discussions and exchanges on the reconversion of industrial heritage in Luxembourg.

Through this programme, the aim is to introduce the public to an emblematic site of Luxembourg’s steelmaking history, now transformed into a contemporary cultural space.

From Friday 16 to Sunday 18 October 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. – Building 4 (Esch-sur-Alzette)
