Manual Timelapse and the Perception of Change
In this hands-on workshop, participants explore how time shapes images — and how images can reveal the passage of time. Inspired by the work of artist David Claerbout, whose practice blurs the line between still photography and film, the workshop invites participants to slow down and observe subtle changes in light and atmosphere.
By creating a timelapse, participants photograph a subject in transformation — such as the sky, a flower, or a landscape — over the course of several hours. In the spirit of Edward Muybridge’s early motion studies, this process turns slow and often imperceptible changes into an animated sequence of images.
When the photographs are translated into film, they are played back in fast motion. This acceleration makes it possible to visualize phenomena that would otherwise remain invisible to the naked eye.
The workshop takes place in two steps:
- Capture: Take photos at regular intervals using a Polaroid, analogue, or digital camera.
- Compose: Assemble the images into an animated sequence using Adobe Premiere.
All materials are provided by Konschthal. Participants are welcome to bring their own gear. Editing will be done using Adobe Premiere.
