Exploring Time and Materiality through 16mm Film Inspired by David Claerbout

Discover the art of time, perception, and the materiality of film in this immersive Masterclass inspired by the work of renowned contemporary artist David Claerbout.

David Claerbout’s unique practice blurs the line between photography and cinema, inviting viewers to experience time slowly—through long durations, subtle changes in light, and delicate shifts in atmosphere. His work encourages us to pause, observe, and engage deeply with the flow of time as a tangible, almost physical presence.

This Masterclass offers a hands-on journey into the world of analogue 16mm film, allowing participants to experience time in a new way—from capturing images to hand-processing and projecting their own film.

Join us to slow down, look closer, and rethink how we engage with images and time.

All materials provided by Konschthal. Work clothes are recommended.

What you will do:

Part 1: Making the Images

Capture a continuous sequence of 1–6 shots in a chosen location, whether a natural landscape or an urban environment.

Part 2: Processing

Learn to hand-develop your film using traditional techniques exploring the tactile and experimental nature of analogue film.

Part 3: Projection

Experience the final stage by projecting your developed film, either as a reel or as a looping installation. Take part in creating a collective experience, shaped by the physicality of the film image and the unique light of the analog projector.
